A Different Perspective - Nathuram Ghodse

We know Nathuram Godse as the man who killed Gandhiji. But how many of us have even bothered to think about the reasons which would have compelled him to commit such a crime. It is very difficult to understand the actions of Nathuram Godse. Firstly there is little information about him and if there is any information it is well hidden by the higher authorities.

One thing is clear from the evidence available that he had great respect for Gandhiji but did not like his ideologies. The fact that Godse was a Hindu fanatic is well-known. He was very close to the refugees who had travelled from Pakistan and were trying to resettle in India. It would be noteworthy that none of his action was against the Muslims. Then why did he kill Gandhiji? Above all when he shot Gandhiji, he was well aware that he was not going to escape the gallows of death still he did not run after committing the crime, he got himself arrested. He even praised Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose for their selfless service for the country.

Few of us are aware that Nathuram Godse was the editor of the famous newspaper 'Agrani'. It should also be noted that in his last write-up he had clearly indicated that Gandhiji had to be stopped even if it requires any drastic steps. This came after the government allowed Rs 55 crore to be handed over to Pakistan due to the hunger strike of Gandhiji.

Nathuram had clearly stated that he was not at all happy with the partition of India. He had condemned the act because he thought that the number of Muslims were less as compared to the total Indian population.

He took the initiative which may be condemned by many because in his viewpoint he was doing a favour to his countrymen by killing Gandhiji. He took the sole responsibility of the act without even associating anyone else with him.

The day of the assassination was fixed as 30th January and it had to be a crowded place where Gandhiji came for his evening prayers. Nathuram Godse was not there to kill Gandhiji but he was there to execute the father of nation.

History has its own criteria of remembering people and their deeds. The irony of the situation is that many people respect Gandhiji for his good deeds but he is also criticized by many people for his deceptive ideologies. On the other hand there are many who feel that Nathuram Ghodse was a man of purpose. Hence it is obvious that people are criticized at all levels and it is best to live the way which we think is right and which will lead to the betterment of mankind.
